Boeing Delivers ILFC's First 787 Dreamliner for Operation by Norwegian

- ILFC becomes first leasing company to take delivery of 787

- Dreamliner marks ILFC's 700th airplane delivery from Boeing

- First 787 to join Norwegian's fleet

EVERETT, Wash., June 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA), International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) and Norwegian celebrated several milestones Thursday during a delivery ceremony for a new 787 Dreamliner. It was the first 787 delivered to ILFC and its lessee, Norwegian, which will operate the airplane. The 787 also marked the 700th airplane Boeing delivered to ILFC.

"Today's delivery is a tremendous milestone for two leaders in their respective markets," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. "ILFC continues to demonstrate its industry leadership as the first leasing company to take delivery of a 787. Norwegian gains a significant competitive advantage by opening its long-haul routes with this airplane."

The delivery to ILFC builds on Boeing's 40-year relationship with the Los Angeles-based leasing company and largest 787 customer with 74 Dreamliners on order.

"We're proudly celebrating delivery of ILFC's first Boeing 787 Dreamliner to Norwegian, our launch customer for the aircraft," said ILFC Chief Executive Officer Henri Courpron. "As the largest customer in the 787 program, we're the industry's leader in bringing the latest technology aircraft to the global leasing market."

Norwegian Chief Executive Officer Bjorn Kjos said, "Today marks a major milestone in Norwegian's history. It's with great pleasure we eventually take delivery of our first 787 Dreamliner. Both our many customers and we at Norwegian have been looking forward to this for several months. I'm convinced that our customers will love flying this brand new aircraft with its many customer friendly features. Our goal is to operate the most environmentally friendly and cost efficient fleet, something to which the Dreamliner will significantly contribute."

Norwegian currently has eight 787s on order through lease agreements and direct deliveries. The carrier will use the 787s to service its new long-haul routes from Oslo and Stockholm to New York and Bangkok. In November, the airline also will operate the 787 to Fort Lauderdale from Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen.

The 787 Dreamliner is composed of light-weight composites and features numerous system, engine and aerodynamic advancements providing airlines with unmatched fuel efficiency using 20 percent less fuel than today's similarly sized airplanes. Passengers also enjoy improvements on the 787 such as an interior environment that is more comfortable and offers numerous passenger-pleasing elements including bigger windows.

To date, the 787 has accumulated 930 orders from 58 customers worldwide.

AEROLÍNEAS ARGENTINAS AGREES TO LEA A330-200S FROM ILFC

International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC), a wholly owned

subsidiary of American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG), announced it has signed an

agreement to add four A330-200 widebody aircraft to the Aerolíneas Argentinas (Aerolíneas)

“ILFC is honored to work with Aerolíneas to help support the airline’s strategic initiatives to grow

its fleet and increase the network of long-range services throughout the region,” commented

ILFC Chief Executive Officer Henri Courpron. “We are delighted to introduce the A330-200

aircraft to the Aerolineas fleet. This transaction highlights ILFC’s unique ability to provide a

comprehensive, tailored fleet solution that meets our customer’s specific requirements.”

“For the last four years and under the Argentine State managed turnaround, Aerolineas

Argentinas has been committed to a solid business plan. Our widebody fleet has been

modernized and simplified to serve a very challenging geographical network. On the process

towards newer generation solutions, the introduction of four A330-200 from very prestigious and

British Airways to Use 787 on Routes to Toronto and Newark

British Airways (BA) is to launch scheduled long-haul passenger flights with its new Boeing 787 Dreamliners on September 1, 2013 on the route between London Heathrow and Toronto Pearson International and then on a second route to Newark Liberty International from October 1, 2013. The carrier currently serves both the markets using Boeing 767s as well as larger equipment and the new generation airliner will enable it to better compete with rivals to the two Star Alliance hubs.

BA accepted delivery of its first two aircraft this week with the first arriving at its London Heathrow base just after 12:00pm on June 27, 2013 and the second following shortly after. The airline had revealed earlier this month that its first aircraft was due to arrive in the UK during the morning of June 26, 2013 but after accepting delivery of the aircraft the day before, “minor operational issues” delayed its departure from Boeing’s Paine Field production site.

"The 787 is a tremendous, innovative aircraft which sets new standards for environmental performance and operating efficiency and I'm sure British Airways' customers will love it," said Willie Walsh, Chief Executive Officer of International Airlines Group (IAG), parent of British Airways, following the jets arrival in London. "The 787 will become a mainstay of the British Airways fleet over the next few years."

The first aircraft will initially operate on the London – Toronto route on a daily basis from September 1, 2013, increasing to ten times weekly between September 15, 2013 and October 26, 2013. The Dreamliner will then debut on the London – Newark route on a daily basis from October 1, 2013, increasing to 13 times weekly from October 27, 2013 as additional aircraft arrive.

Before its scheduled launch the type will begin what BA describes as a “complex entry into service programme”, which will see pilot and cabin crew training taking place at Manston Airport in Kent. BA confirms that additional customer service trials will take place at London Heathrow, while short-haul flying will include flights within the UK. The 787 is "likely" to substitute for other equipment on the carrier's London Heathrow - Stockholm Arlanda passenger flights during this training period, according to BA.

The 787 will bring new opportunities for BA and will seat 214 passengers (35 in Club World Business Class, 25 in World Traveller Plus Premium Economy and 154 in World Traveller Economy). In terms of capacity it can act as a direct replacement for its ageing 767-300ER fleet, seating around 20 additional passengers in this three-class configuration. However, its efficiency and operational performance means it is also well placed to open new long-haul markets and to replace larger 777-200ER equipment and right-sizing demand in some particular markets.

We revealed earlier this month that destinations such as Newark Liberty International and Washington Dulles in the US and Calgary International, Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International and Toronto Lester B Pearson International were thought the most likely initial long-haul markets for the jet. The 787 is also well-placed to serve new emerging markets in Asia and could be used effectively on existing routes to India and to expand BA’s activities across Asia.

These initial Dreamliners are the first of 24 787s BA has on order. In addition, IAG recently announced that it will convert 18 787 options to firm orders for the UK carrier, subject to shareholder agreement. Twelve of these will be the new 787-10s, meaning BA will operate the entire 787 family – the 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10.

Sichuan Airlines takes delivery of its first A320 with Sharklets

Customer flies higher with eco-efficient Airbus aircraft

Sichuan Airlines, the largest all Airbus fleet operator in China, has taken delivery of its first A320 aircraft equipped with Sharklets, joining the rapidly increasing group of Airbus single-aisle aircraft operators benefiting from the latest fuel saving aerodynamic devices.

The A320, powered by IAE V2500 engines, features a comfortable two class cabin, seating 164 passengers with eight in business class and 156 in economy.

“As the first airline to introduce Airbus fly-by-wire aircraft in China, Sichuan Airlines has benefited from the low cost and highly reliable Airbus aircraft. Thanks to the commonality of Airbus aircraft, we were able to seamlessly introduce the wide body A330 Family aircraft into our fleet. With the introduction of this A320 with Sharklets, we will be able to further optimise our route network and bring a high level of comfort to our passengers as well as further reducing our operational cost”, said Li Haiying, General Manager of Sichuan Airlines Co., Ltd.

“We are proud to be part of Sichuan Airlines’ success story. They were first Chinese airline to operate the A320, the first to take delivery of an A320 assembled at Airbus’ Tianjin Final Assembly Line, and now one of the first with Sharklets in China,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “The Sharklets will deliver up to four per cent reduction in fuel burn and make the airline even more competitive across China and Asia”, said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers.

Sichuan Airlines is China’s largest all Airbus fleet operator. It introduced an A320 in 1995 to become the first Chinese airline to operate an Airbus fly-by-wire aircraft. In 2009, the airline received the first A320 assembled at the Airbus Final Assembly Line China (FALC) in Tianjin. Now it operates a fleet of five A330s and 70 A320 Family aircraft.

Sharklets are made from light-weight composites and are 2.4 meters tall. They are an option on new-build A320 Family aircraft and standard on all members of the new A320neo family. They offer operators up to four per cent fuel burn reduction on longer range sectors and provide the flexibility of either adding an additional 100 nautical miles range or increased payload capability of up to 450 kilograms.

The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling and most modern single aisle aircraft Family. To date, nearly 9,500 aircraft have been ordered and nearly 5,600 delivered to more than 380 customers and operators worldwide. With proven reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single-aisle aircraft.

Libyan Airlines takes delivery of its first Airbus A330

Newest operator of world’s most efficient mid-size aircraft

Libyan Airlines, the national carrier of Libya, has taken delivery of its first A330-200 becoming a new operator for the type. The carrier already operates seven A320 aircraft, with three A330-200 and four A350-800 aircraft on order.

Accommodating a two-class configuration of 24 business and 235 economy seats, the aircraft is powered by GE CF6-80 engines and will be deployed in the Middle East, around Dubai and Jeddah, as well as on Asian and European trunk routes.

“We are pleased to welcome Libyan Airlines as a new operator of the A330 family aircraft. Libya has great potential and its fleet is comprised of predominantly Airbus aircraft,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “With the A330-200, Libyan Airlines will benefit from the aircraft’s low operating costs, proven reliability and great passenger appeal.”

The A330 Family, which spans 250 to 300 seats, and includes Freighter, VIP, and Military Transport/Tanker variants, has now attracted more than 1,200 orders, with around 900 aircraft flying with more than 100 operators worldwide. Ever since the original version of the A330-200 entered service, the hallmark has been its very efficient operating economics. Thanks to the introduction of numerous product improvements, it still remains the most cost-efficient and capable aircraft in its class operating today, and the family achieves average dispatch reliability above 99 percent.

Air New Zealand unveiled the first of its brand new fuel-efficient Airbus A320 aircraft at the Paris Air Show overnight

Air New Zealand is the launch customer for the aircraft, which features 2.4 metre high curved wing tip devices known as Sharklets that increase fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.

Ten of the Sharklet equipped A320 aircraft will join Air New Zealand’s fleet between now and 2015.

Air New Zealand’s Chief Flight Operations and Safety Officer, Captain David Morgan, says the A320 is at the core of Air New Zealand’s domestic fleet and the airline is committed to moving all domestic flying to this aircraft type to reap the efficiency gains on offer.

“In a seat to seat comparison, the Sharklet equipped A320 will burn 18% less fuel per passenger compared with our Boeing 737-300 jets, which are scheduled to be phased out of our fleet over the next couple of years.

“From a CO2 perspective, each Sharklet equipped A320 aircraft will save 250 tonnes of carbon per year compared with an A320 without Sharklets.”

The Paris Air Show is the world’s oldest and largest aviation event and brings together industry players from across the globe to showcase the latest technological developments in the field.

This is the 50th Le Bourget Paris Air Show and Captain Morgan says Air New Zealand is proud to have its aircraft selected to be part of the Airbus display at this prestigious event.

AIR NEW ZEALAND CONFIRMS INITIAL 787-9 DESTINATIONS

Air New Zealand, the launch customer for the new larger Boeing 787-9 variant of the Dreamliner, has confirmed it will initially deploy the jets on its long-haul routes to Shanghai and Tokyo, although the type will also see service on medium-haul routes to destinations such as Honolulu, Papeete and Perth. The first prototype 787-9 is due to roll-off the production line at Boeing’s Seattle facility next month, but it will be around a year before the type enters commercial service with the New Zealand flag carrier.

The Star Alliance member is expected to receive the first of ten 787-9s that it has on order in the middle of next year and will add two further examples before the end of the year. As revealed by Air New Zealand, these will initially be used on existing routes, but plans are already been discussed to use the long-range aircraft on new routes from 2015, with Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon describing the aircraft as a “game changer” for the airline.

“This modern flexible fuel efficient aircraft will not only replace our current fleet of Boeing 767s, it also represents a significant growth opportunity for our business and opens up the prospect of expanding our Pacific Rim footprint,” he said.

The 787-9 is a larger version of the 787 Dreamliner, able to carry about 40 more passengers and fly slightly farther than the current model, which carries around 250 passengers. Boeing has secured over 350 orders from more than 20 customers for the type. At the recent Paris Air Show, Boeing launched a further stretched version of the aircraft, the 787-10, with orders from British Airways, Singapore Airlines and United and lessors Air Lease and GECAS.

Air New Zealand has not revealed its precise configuration for the 787-9 but confirms that it will offer a four-class layout with a Business Premier cabin, a Premium Economy cabin with what it describes as a “business lite” seat, a 16 row Economy cabin that provides its Skycouch seats (a row of three seats that converts into a sofa like flat surface) and a standard Economy cabin.

According to Luxon, the addition of the 787-9 to the Air New Zealand fleet means the airline will be able to offer a consistent product experience across its long haul fleet, and will see the Skycouch available on routes into Asia for the first time. “Given our 787-9’s will be multiple purpose aircraft – operating both long and mid haul sectors – we’ve put a lot of research effort into coming up with four distinct seating selections that meet the customer expectations across the markets it will serve,” added Luxon.

EVA Air to phase out the 747-400; eyes more 777s, A321s and the 787

EVA Air  plans to phase out its fleet of B747-400s over the next three years EVA chairman Chang Kuo-wei has revealed. As part of its fleet renewal plans, EVA is looking to acquire thirty-five B777s in both cargo and passenger configurations while also acquiring ten more A321s from Airbus Industrie .

Over the next five to ten years, the 787 from Boeing will become the backbone of the carrier's long-haul fleet he said. At present, EVA has fifteen B777-300(ER)s with an added seven on order and four A321-200s with 14 more on order. In terms of its business strategy, Mr Chang said instead of increasing the number of routes flown, EVA would concentrate on boosting the frequency of its higher-profitability cross-strait flights as a means of enhancing its niche.

Boeing deploys additional 717s to Qantas, Volotea

Australia's QantasLink to receive five aircraft on multi-year lease; Volotea to add five in 2013

Press Release: Boeing Capital Corporation

SEATTLE, June 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing's (BA) workhorse 717 continues to figure prominently in the success of established and new operators as the manufacturer's leasing unit, Boeing Capital Corp., announced additional deployments of the modern and fuel-efficient twinjets.

Australia's largest regional airline, QantasLink, will receive an additional five leased 717s to add to its existing fleet of 13 of the twinjets that operate across Australia. Those deliveries will begin in late 2013 after the aircraft are refitted with upgraded interiors to include a full business class experience and new in-flight entertainment systems. The Qantas Group has operated the 717s since 2002.

QantasLink Executive Manager John Gissing said the refurbished aircraft will improve its customer offering and increase the overall level of customer comfort and satisfaction.

"The new 717s, with the reconfigured cabin including business class and in-flight entertainment, are perfectly suited to our Sydney-Canberra, Brisbane-Canberra and Melbourne-Canberra routes," said Gissing. "We're delighted that we can offer this premium product to our customers and we're looking forward to introducing them into the market later this year."

In Europe, startup carrier, Volotea, will increase its 717 fleet in 2013 to a total 15 as it continues to develop its business model of offering point-to-point service to passengers between medium and small-sized European cities. Volotea began operation in spring 2012 with a network built around the 717 that is supported by a comprehensive Boeing solution for operations and training.

Volotea recently surpassed the million passenger mark enabled by its operation from 52 European airports, currently serving 97 city pairs.

"The Boeing 717 is an important element to Volotea strategy," said Carlos Munoz, Volotea's founder and CEO. "In terms of size, it is the right aircraft for the medium- and small-sized cities we serve; operationally, it offers top reliability for our frequent, quick turnaround operations. Most importantly, our customers have grown to value the levels of comfort the 717 provides."

According to Boeing Capital's managing director for asset management, Thomas Hansen, 2013 will be a landmark year for the 717, the single-largest model holding in its fleet.

"Our deployments scheduled for this year will result in all of our 717s doing what they do best, and that is helping customers to make money thanks to the airplane's great operating reliability and their 'big-airplane' style passenger experience," said Hansen.

Hansen added that 2013 will also mark the beginning of a major redeployment of its 717 currently operated by the former AirTran Airways, now part of Southwest Airlines, to Delta Airlines under a sub-lease agreement announced in 2012.

There are more than 150 Boeing 717s in service today since the first airplane was delivered in 1999. The twinjet's technology and fleet performance have earned it the distinction of being the world's best jetliner serving the 100-passenger airline market.

Hawaiian Launches Nonstop Service to Sendai

HONOLULU, June 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Hawaiian Airlines today launched its inaugural flight from Honolulu to Sendai, its fifth gateway in Japan and 10th new international destination it has introduced or announced in less than three years.

Passengers of the inaugural flight enjoyed a festive island-style send-off at Honolulu International Airport before boarding, featuring Hawaiian music and hula, a traditional Hawaiian blessing, presentation of fresh flower lei, and a special performance honoring the Japanese culture.

"Our new nonstop service provides travelers throughout the entire region of Sendai with convenient access to our home, the Hawaiian Islands," said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian's president and CEO. "Hawai'i has deep connections with Japan, and we are very delighted to launch our fifth destination there as we continue to grow our network in Asia."

Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, which has a population of more than 9 million. Sendai is known in Japan as "Mori no Miyako," or Forest City, for its many green spaces in its city center. It is also known for its high quality rice and for its summer Tanabata Festival, which draws thousands of visitors from across Japan.

Hawaiian's Honolulu-Sendai service is the first scheduled service between Sendai and Hawai'i since another carrier left the market in 2004, and among the first new services to be introduced at Sendai Airport since it was closed for more than a month in 2011 due to damage caused by the Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

"Congratulations and aloha to Hawaiian Airlines on the launch of their new Sendai flight," said Mike McCartney, president and CEO of the Hawai'i Tourism Authority. "This flight will provide visitors from Northern Japan with greater access to the Hawaiian Islands and will help us in our efforts to reach two million visitors by 2016, a goal we set with the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA). We look forward to sharing our islands' unique culture and aloha spirit with visitors from Sendai."

Hawaiian's Flight HA 441 departs Honolulu International Airport on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 12:55 p.m., cross the international dateline, and arrive at Sendai International Airport at 4:30 p.m. the following day. The return Flight 442 will then continue to Sapporo's New Chitose Airport at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, arriving at New Chitose at 7:00 p.m. before departing to Honolulu at 9:10 p.m., crossing the international dateline and arriving in Honolulu at 9:50 a.m. the same day.

Hawaiian operates the Honolulu-Sendai-Sapporo flights using its fleet of roomy wide-body, twin-aisle Boeing 767-300ER aircraft that seat up to 264 passengers.

Travelers will enjoy a customized presentation of Hawaiian's signature inflight hospitality program, combining its celebration of the islands' culture, natural beauty, people, cuisine, and Aloha Spirit, with entertainment options and special onboard products designed for the Japanese traveler.

The addition of Sendai to Hawaiian's international network follows the launches of service to Tokyo in November 2010, Seoul in January 2011, Osaka in July 2011, Fukuoka in April 2012, New York in June 2012, Sapporo in October 2012, Brisbane in November 2012 and Auckland in March 2013. Hawaiian previously announced new service to Taipei, Taiwan in July 2013. New nonstop service will begin between Honolulu and Beijing, China in April 2014, subject to government approvals.

In the U.S., tickets can be purchased online at www.HawaiianAirlines.com, or by phone toll-free through Hawaiian's reservations center at 1-800-367-5320. In Japan, tickets can be purchased online via Hawaiian's Japanese-language website at www.HawaiianAirlines.co.jp, or by phone through its sales office in Japan at 03-5405-8761.

SAS selects eight A350 XWBs and four A330s

Airbus fleet will bring the airline into a new long haul future

Scandinavian carrier SAS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for eight A350 XWBs and four A330s, as part of its strategy to modernize its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft. The agreement was signed in the Nowegian capital, Oslo. The new A350-900s and A330-300s will join the airline’s existing fleet of 30 Airbus aircraft. Engine selection for the A330s will be announced by the airline at a later date.

Currently, SAS operates a fleet of 19 A320 Family aircraft, four A330s and seven A340s. The new wide-body aircraft will fit seamlessly into the airline’s fleet and deliver operational efficiencies and cost savings due to the commonality across the fleet, a feature unique to Airbus.

“The great technological improvements of this extensive fleet renewal plan give SAS a long haul fleet that will be top of class in the industry. It will truly increase our competitiveness and strengthen our customer offering – both with regard to comfort, service and efficiency. We look forward to welcoming our passengers on board these fuel efficient aircraft with extremely comfortable and quiet cabins,” said Rickard Gustafson, SAS Group President & CEO.

“We are delighted that SAS has underscored their confidence in Airbus by selecting our A330, which offers unbeatable economics and the highest level of operational reliability alongside the A350 XWB, the world’s most technologically advanced and efficient aircraft,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers.’’

The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) is an all-new, mid-size long-range aircraft product line comprising three versions and seating between 270 and 350 passengers in typical three-class layouts. The A350 XWB Family will bring a step change in efficiency compared with existing aircraft in its size category, using 25 per cent less fuel and providing an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions.

The A330 Family, which spans 250 to 300 seats, and includes Freighter, VIP, and Military Transport/Tanker variants, has now attracted more than 1,200 orders, with around 900 aircraft flying with more than 100 operators worldwide. Ever since the original version of the A330-300 entered service, the hallmark has been its very efficient operating economics. Thanks to the introduction of numerous product improvements, it still remains the most cost-efficient and capable aircraft in its class operating today, and the family achieves average dispatch reliability above 99 percent.
